Who We Are |
![]() |
At Greene Herb, our aim is breed sound, productive animals that will adapt well to any good management program. We don't strive for Top Ten does or National Champions, but we don't charge fancy prices, either. Our does have fared very well in tough Northwest show competition, and are capable of milking through for two or more years on grass hay, pasture/browse and 3-6# of grain per day, depending on production. Our management program is probably similar to yours.
In 1986, we started on a pasteurized milk/heat treated colostrum
program for raising kids, and kids are strong, growthy and resistant to
disease. Today we raise doe kids mostly on pasteurized milk, although
due to job constraints, an occasional doe kid manages to "slip through
the cracks", and we do dam-raise bucks and wethers, unless they are
ordered in advance. Boer cross doelings are all dam-raised.
Our does are all healthy, with clean joints
and have shown no signs of
CAEV arthritis for many, many years.
We don't feed huge amounts of grain or alfalfa, and we milk
only twice a day, so production is in the 2,000 to 2,600 pound range
for mature does, with an occasional "star" of 3,000 lbs.
They are reliable milkers-- many are expected to milk through for two
years or more. We milk both by hand and by machine.
We had the herd linear appraised in 2004, with results in the upper
80's.
We don't pamper our goats. They live outside in all kinds of
weather, with a large loafing shed for protection from the copious
Oregon rain. All the does are housed together and expected to get
along-- we don't have the room or the patience to put up with separate
quarters. We vaccinate for CD and tetanus-- the only supplementation
besides free choice salt and trace minerals consists of regular BoSe
injections. In fifteen years of breeding, with a herd averaging
10-15 milking does, we've seldom had to treat for mastitis.
Registered Alpine kid prices range from $175 to $275. We'd
prefer you pick them
up in person when they are weaned at 3 to 4 months, but we can make
arrangements to ship 5 to 6 week-old kids, at your expense (Eugene
airport has direct flights to many major cities). A deposit of
$100 will hold your choice, but please select a second choice in case
the doe doesn't cooperate. Milking does are $250 and up. Buck kids are guaranteed to settle
does by one year of age, and we won't offer buck kids out of first
fresheners. We offer discounts to 4-H/FFA and on multiple
purchases. Boer crosses are sold by weight.
